SBR is an activated sludge wastewater treatment system for removing dissolved and suspended organic materials and nutrients. In SBR all the unit operations such as aeration, settling and decanting are achieved in a single reactor. SBR CYCLES FILLING PHASE AERATION PHASE SETTLING PHASE DECANT PHASE SBR BENEFITS • Reduced capital cost: Single integrated bioreactor concept reduces auxiliary equipment and built-up land requirement. • Reduced operating and maintenance costs: The high level of automation results in reduced supervision requirements, contributing to lower operating and maintenance costs. • Nutrient reduction: High treatment efficiency includes biological reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus and reductions of BOD5 and TSS too less than 10 mg/l. • Less excess sludge and stabilized: Low microbiological loading results in longer sludge age, significantly less excess sludge production, and its stabilization. After heat treatment for pathogens (in some cases directly) the sludge may be used as fertilizer. • No odor: Aerobic conditions throughout the bioreactor and extended sludge age dramatically reduce the potential for odor. Plants can be located in the vicinity of populated areas without any ill effect. • Modular and flexible design: Ensures that plants meeting current needs can be quickly expanded if and when growth demands. A variety of construction materials are used and plant components can even be retrofitted into existing tanks. • Improved sludge dewatering: Extended sludge age improves its structure and mechanical dewatering characteristics. • Proven: Literally hundreds of plants in operation worldwide. EFFICIENCY OF SBR Frequent alteration of factors allows enrichment of a variety of microbial strains Exploitation of metabolic capabilities of various strains is achieved Bacteria maintain high metabolic rate even in low substrate concentration PROCESS DESCRIPTION Screening:- The sewage will be taken into a bar screen chamber for removal of floating materials such as grass, polythene bags etc. A manual type coarse bar screen will be provided for separation of floating materials. The screened Sewage is collected in collection sump then pumped into the SBR Tank by means of sewage transfer pump where Aeration, Clarification & Decanting of Sewage takes place. Aeration, Clarification & Decanting:- We are proposing Sequential Batch Reactor, wherein in one reactor the sewage undergoes the unit operations of Aeration, Settling and Decanting. A write up on the same is given below for your reference. Sequencing Batch Reactors actually represent a very elementary form of treatment process known as “Fill and Draw”. Wastewater added to a reactor is treated to remove undesirable components, and is subsequently discharged. The SBR reactor is a self-contained system incorporating equalization, aeration and clarification, aeration and clarification within the confines of a SINGLE basin. The SBR uses the latest biomass conditioning technology. This enables the SBR system to attain nutrient control without the addition of chemicals and to out perform continuous “flow through systems. SBR process is similar to an Activated Sludge Process. The major advantages are: Improved sewage qualities, The elimination of separate clarifier and sludge return pumps, Increased settling area (the total reactor area is used for settling), A perfectly quiescent settling environment, Elimination of short circuiting, A special ability to handle extremely high organic and hydraulic shock load, The capability to equalize flows and loads. Choice of Food / MLSS ratio Although the F/M ratio in the SBR system continually changes during the Fill and React phases, the average values are comparable to those in activated sludge systems. Currently most installed SBR systems are based on low load design, (in order to obtain a high degree of BOD removal and nitrification), typically with a F/M ratio of 0.05 to 0.15 kg BOD/kg MLSS. This is comparable to an extended aeration type process. Conventionally loaded activated sludge systems operate in the range of 0.15 – 0.40 kg BOD /kg MLSS, depending on the requirements for discharge. SBR can also be designed in this designed in this range but the higher the F/M ratio, the higher the excess sludge production and a decreasing nitrification and stabilization. High rate systems are particularly useful as industrial pre-treatment applications where removal of the BOD is not possible in one treatment step. Operation Normally the process follows the basic steps of; AERATE, SETTLE and DECANT. The actual cycle time will vary with the effluent results desired. If only BOD reduction is desired, a cycle time as 3 hours may be used. If further treatment, to obtain nitrification/Denitrification f. e. is required, the cycle time can be extended to accommodate the process requirements. The AERATE phase in the SBR system is typically timed controlled and can be adjusted depending on the required removal efficiency. The AERATE phase is followed by the SETTLING PHASE. The settling represents the quiescent phase during which no aeration or mixing occurs and is also time controlled. The last step is the DECANT step represents the quiescent phase during which no aeration or mixing occurs and is also time controlled. The last step is the DECANT step representing the discharge of clarified effluent controlled by level in the reactor. Aeration phase : Depending on capacity Settling Phase : Normally 45 minutes to 60 min Decant phase : Reduction from maximum to minimum level within 60 min The clarified Sewage then flows into the Filter Feed Sump from where it is pumped into the MM Filter. Disinfection of sewage will be done by using Hypochlorite solution. For this Hypochlorite tank and dosing pump will be provided. The sludge in the SBR Tank is removed by means of Sludge Transfer Pumps to SDB/Filter Press.
